The two games at Albufeira were not as entertaining in many ways as those before, as they were so one-sided. But there was still some good football played.

Picture set from both games here

My thoughts on the games here

Brazil beat Switzerland 4-1 with two good goals by number 10 Marta Silva being the highlight. The Swiss were their rugged selves once again, conceding 21 free kicks and earning two yellow cards. Brazil weren’t far behind though in was at times a fairly tetchy encounter.

The second game between Norway and Denmark was so utterly one sided in the first half that I wondered what the Danes had been drinking the night before. Norway dominated proceedings to the extent that Denmark managed just one shot, miles wide, in the entire first half. Norway lead 3-0 at half time. Denmark played better in the second period but could hardly have been any worse.

Norway won 5-2 in the end.

Tournament winners were USA, who beat France 2-0 in the final.

This year’s tournament has provided some excellent entertainment featuring many of the top women’s teams in the world and all free of charge. This year it is essentially part of the preparation programme for the World Cup to be held in Canada later this year.

Here’s some words and pictures from the games I have seen so far. There are two more here tomorrow, featuring Brazil, Swizterland, Norway and Denmark. The final will be between France and USA at the Algarve Stadium

USA 5 – 0 China played in very wet conditions in Albufeira’s Municipal Stadium.

It could have been more. Leroux stood in front of an open goal waiting for the pass that never came.  The other pictures are here.

Algarve Women’s Cup 2013

This annual tournament got under way yesterday afternoon. Here in Albufeira we had a double header of matches between USA and Iceland, followed by Germany v Denmark. A crowd of about 500 saw a poor performance by the USA, who nevertheless managed to win 3-0. The scoreline was a bit flattering to say the least, against a typical Icelandic side who ran hard, never gave up but cannot match the bigger nations.

The second match was played in wind and rain. Neither team seemed too put out by this although there was some slipping and sliding. The result was a 0-0 draw in a game dominated by defences.

I took a few pictures, you can see them here
