Paderne (Algarve) pictures

Continuing the tour of the Algarve, here are the photos I took in and around Paderne on Tuesday.

For those who may not know it, Paderne is about six miles north of Albufeira. The village has a population of about 3,500 and seems fairly prosperous although, like most places hereabouts, the older buildings in the centre are largely abandoned and becoming derelict.

When you park or get off the bus at the football ground on the edge of the village proper, there is a noticeboard with details of the walking trails in the area. These take you into the wooded areas, down to the river and up to the castle ruins. Each lasts about 2 to 2 and a half hours. There’s nothing out there, so take some water. The walks are very pleasant and none too taxing although some sections are on rough tracks, so sensible footwear is recommended.

The village has only one tiny shop plus a shop selling pet food! Take any other supplies with you. There a number of cafés and bars at the lower (newer) end of the village and one on the road towards Boliqueime.

You can take a nice afternoon walk by driving or taking the bus from Albufeira to Paderne. On entering the village by car, you pass the sports hall on the right, then the cemetery. There is a parking area immediately beyond, outside the football ground. The bus stops there also.
