I am gettting the hang of this now.

I have at last worked out how to create a picture gallery and from that a slideshow. These pictures were taken in the area of Páteo, Albufeira on September 28th and 29th.  Páteo was once a small huddle of cottages about 3/4 mile (1km) from the old town of Albufeira. Set up on a hill about 300 feet (100 metres) high it has become a suburb. Many tourist resort developments have sprung up over the past 20 years. A vast development called Oceanville was completed in August 2008, opened briefly and then closed down by order of the local city council as a result of several breaches of planning regulations and permissions. It has remained closed ever since. Many people who bought apartments ‘off plan’ have never been allowed to occupy them and must be in danger of losing their money.

About half a mile down the road is another fairly large development, roads all laid out but never a brick was laid. Across to the next hill one gated community called Eden Resort was completed earlier this year but hardly any of the 100+ homes are occupied owing to the extreme cost. Opposite that another site was laid out for development four years ago but again not a brick has been laid.

Is the tourist boom over? Is the recession going to spell the end for cheap holidays for sun-starved Northern Europeans? Already many tourist oriented businesses here in Albufeira are closing down after two poor trading summers. I am sure we shall see more.

That’s enough learning and typing for this morning. By the time I make my next post I hope to have found out some more new things. By the way that link at the top to Flickr is nothign to do with me and I haven’t figured out yet how to remove it.
